Mora Primary & Nursery School

Making a difference

19th November 2021

This week we have been reading ‘Mixed’ by Arree Chung. It is about three groups of primary colours, red, yellow and blue. Reds are the LOUSEST, Yellows are the brightest and blues are the coolest! These colours live in harmony until red proclaims “Reds are the best!”. Each colour believes they are the best which causes a rift in the city! The colours decide to live in different parts of the city, that is until one day a yellow befriends a blue. They become inseparable and they decide to mix, creating a cute green baby! Soon all the colours begin to mix and discover a world of possibilities and colours.

We have been busy learning about different shades of colours like turquoise, navy, violet and maroon. We have also been talking about mixed heritage families and writing speech bubbles!

We got scientific and conducted an experiment using (halal) skittles. We placed skittles on a paper plate, added water and watched as the colours spread, moved and changed.

In maths, we have been using a ten frame to help us subitise and count. When we subitise objects, we instantaneously recognise the number of objects in a small group without the need to count them e.g. dots on a dice. A ten frame has 10 squares. When each square is full we know there are 10 objects. When the top row is full we know there are 5 objects. When the bottom row is full we know there are 5 objects – we don’t have to count them! Perhaps you can make your own ten frame at home. Practise placing objects on it, in different positions, and subitising how many you have.

In phonics, we have been revisiting and reviewing all sounds we have learnt so far as well as writing simple sentences using tricky words.

Our home corner transformed into a dentist as we got into the routine of brushing our teeth after lunch! We have done lots of toothy learning including making mouths with playdough and using dried butter beans as teeth!
