Making a difference

4th February 2022

We noticed the children were particularly interested in witches and wizards, so our planning and learning took a magical turn this week! We read Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. We immersed ourselves in magic all week long. Dressing up, flying broomsticks, casting spells, making potions and doing our best witchy cackles! Perhaps you could make your own fizzing potion at home. Just add bicarbonate of soda to vinegar and watch what happens! What else could you add to make your potion extra magical? Write a potion ingredient list and use your sounds to help you.

In maths, we have been exploring weight. We have been using language such as heavy, light, heavier, lighter, heaviest and lightest. We have been comparing different weights and ordering objects from heaviest to lightest. Perhaps this weekend you could have a go at using some kitchen scales to weigh some ingredients for a tasty meal!

In phonics we have learnt some new sounds:

                 ur   ow   oi    ear

We used these sounds to make words:

hurt, surf, curl, cow, brown, clown, boil, soil, foil, hear, year, fear, beard

Examples of sentences to read and write:

I am hurt.

The cow is brown.

The pot is boiling.

I can hear with my ear.

Reminders:

  • Guided reading books are to be returned every Monday. Your child will receive a new book on a Wednesday.
