Autumn 1

Week  3

Our first full week in Reception without our grown-ups is complete!

We have been getting to know one another and our environment and learning the rules and routines at school. Despite a few tears, we are all settling in well!

Next week we will be starting our topic - Space! Our first story will be 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy,

Perhaps this weekend you could look at pictures of The Moon. Or even better, see if you can spot The Moon in the sky (as long as it's not past your bedtime!)

Week 4

Literacy

This week , we focused on developing our listening skills by learning how to listen carefully and understanding why listening was important. We also practiced articulating our ideas and thoughts in well-formed sentences. During the week, we read the story Whatever Next! by Jill Murphy, in which Baby Bear embarked on an adventure to the moon. We strengthened our communication and language skills by discussing the main events of the story, as well as the setting and the characters.

Maths

This week, we learned how to count objects, actions, and sounds. We practiced counting out loud and matching numbers to groups of objects up to 10. We enjoyed fun activities that helped us understand that we count to find out “how many” things there are.

In phonics, we have been revisiting and reviewing all the sounds we have learnt so far as well as beginning to read and write simple words.

We have been busy in phonics learning more sounds;

s     a    t

We used these sounds to make words:

at, sat,

Reminders:

  • Our Meet the teacher is on 30th September.
  • Please make ensure your children have a spare clothes at school.

Week 7

This week, we read “The Leaf Thief” by Alice Hemming. It was a lovely story about a squirrel who was counting the leaves outside his home when he realised one was missing. Who was the Leaf Thief? Could it have been Bird? We created beautiful pictures using real leaves, had lots of fun sticking them onto a big piece of paper, and used our sounds to write simple words to label our work.

This week, we learned how to sort objects by colour, size, and texture. We used colourful leaves that we collected from our secret garden and sorted them by size and colour. Our key maths words were: sort, match, same, different, groups, and size.

                                                             We were busy in phonics learning our first set of sounds;

                       s  a  t  p i n m d g o c k ck e u

                                                                            You can practise reading the following words:

                                                                                                      Tricky words we learnt are:

Autumn 2

 Week 1

 Welcome back after the half-term! Our first week of Autumn 2 passed successfully.

Literacy

This week in literacy, we were busy reading the bookWe’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen. We retold the story using well-formed sentences and lots of actions such as swishy swashy” and “splash splosh.” We also called out the repeated phrases from the book aloud: We’re going on a bear hunt, we’re going to catch a big one!” and What a beautiful day! To make our learning more challenging, we created our own versions of the story and wrote key words using our phonics sounds.

 Maths

In maths, we were busy learning about positional language. Position describes where we are in space and how we move within it. The key words we used were: under, behind, next to, in, on, through, and in front of. Throughout the week, we took part in different activities to help us understand what positional language means. We built a massive obstacle course outside and went through it by following instructions such as go under the bridge,”walk on the plank,” and hide behind the tyre.” It was also very funny when we gave each other instructions and directed our friends around the class.

   We were busy in phonics learning our first set of sounds;

                       s  a  t  p i n m d g o c k ck e u r h b

                                                                            You can practise reading the following words:

 Week 2

 Literacy

This week, we read a lovely book called Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Our teacher performed the story for us. It was so much fun! We used props and acted out the story in our setting. We also drew a story map, sequenced the story and labelled our work using our phonics knowledge.

Maths

This week, we used different resources such as cubes, counters, pine cones and acorns to show different ways to make 3 and 4. We combined two smaller numbers to make another number and we recorded some number facts.

 Maths challenge:

How many different ways can you make 4?

   We were busy in phonics learning our first set of sounds;

 Week 3

 Literacy

This week, we read another traditional tale called Little Red Riding Hood. Our teacher performed the story for us, and we performed it for them as well. We used our phonics knowledge to help us write key words related to our learning, such as “wolf,” “forest,” and “grandma.” We also wrote a wanted poster for the wolf and sequenced the story. To finish the week, we even did Little Red Riding Hood yoga, it was so much fun!

 Maths

This week, we were busy learning number bonds to 5. We practised this by using the whole–part model, counters and by playing a game where we had to find the missing number to make five using colourful eggs. Number bonds can be a tricky part of learning, but we did really well.

 Maths challenge:

Find the missing number:

0+____=5

1+____=5

2+____=5

3+____=5

4+____=5

                                                                             We were busy in phonics learning our first set of sounds;

 Week 4

 Literacy

This week, we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff and it quickly became one of our favourite stories. Our teacher performed the tale for us and it was so exciting to watch because we had been preparing our own performances too! We used our phonics knowledge to write simple words connected to the story, such as grass, troll, and big. We also created our own story maps and followed step-by-step instructions to draw a giant troll, just like the one in the book. It was a fun and creative week of storytelling!

 Maths

This week, we learned how to find one more than a given number within 10. We discovered that when we find one more, the number gets bigger.    To practise our maths skills, we used cubes, number lines and natural objects. We also practised using the sentence stem: “One more than … is …”               It was a great week of exploring numbers and building our confidence in maths!

Maths challenge:

Can you say what is one less than a given number?

For example What is one less than 10?

 Week 6

 Literacy

This week, we read The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson. We used our phonics knowledge to write simple words connected to the story, such as “forest,” “big mouse,” and “fox.” We compared the characters from the book using adjectives, and we wrote simple captions using the sounds mat and tricky words mat. It was a busy week for all of us.

Maths

This week, we learned all about 2D shapes. We recognised and named basic shapes such as circles, rectangles, triangles and squares. To made our learning more challenging, we  described the properties of 2D shapes, including sides and corners and we even went on a shape hunt around our school. We noticed that shapes are everywhere!

Maths challenge:

Can you find any 2D shapes around your house?
