Week beginning 12^th June 2023

We hope you enjoyed the activities last week, around bees. This week, we continued with the minibeast theme and read the story ‘Aaaarrgghh, Spider!’ by Lydia Monks. A story about a spider who wanted to be a family pet. We discussed what it would be like to have a spider as a pet, as well how to look after them. Spiders often get a bad name for themselves as people are frightened of them or do not like them. We used our super communication skills to debate whether we think spiders are good guys or bad guys. Spiders are super interesting, so we have been learning spider facts and writing them down. Did you know, spiders can lay up to 1,000 eggs? Can you see spot any spiders or cobwebs at home/park?

In Maths, we began learning about subtraction and counting back. We used marks to represent the amount of objects we have and crossed them off as we subtract them to see how many we have left. We know that we have to count backwards when we subtract and we know that the numbers are always getting smaller while we take away. We also consolidated one less using cubes.

Week beginning 5^th June 2023

We are learning about mini beasts and this week we are busy learning about bees. Our story of the week has no words! Therefore, we are writing speech bubbles and captions for pictures from the story and we are learning some interesting facts about bees. Perhaps this weekend you can go on a minibeast hunt and see what bugs you can spot! Can you see any bees? Write a list of bugs you find. Tell your family some interesting facts you have learnt about bees.

We are consolidating our number bonds to 10 by splitting 10 into 2 parts in lots of different resources such as coat hangers, cubes and numicon.​

This week, we read the story called “The treasure of Pirate Frank,” written by Mal Peet.  The story is about a little, adventurous boy who wanted to find a treasure of Pirate Frank. We have been busy writing sentences about the story and we have even started to make predictions. Perhaps this weekend you can go draw or make your own treasure chest! What would you put inside? 

In Maths, we explored British currency. We used our knowledge of money to identify and describe what each coin is worth.

Week beginning 15th May 2023

This week we listened to and retold the story of ‘Peter Pan’ or also known as ‘The Boy who Never Grow up’. We have been busy studying different characters from the story for example Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and Tic Toc. We discussed their physical appearance and behaviour towards others. Then, we worked in groups to create descriptive nun phrases such as ‘silver hook’, green hat and used them to write character descriptions. To learnt how to write questions and interview a character from our story.

In Maths, we have been learning how to say the number that is one less than a given number, we have counted backwards to find one less than a given number. We also learnt that one less is related to subtraction and we started recording some subtraction facts.

 We have been busy sharing our ideas about the important event that happened over the weekend - coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla Consort. We have been writing invitations, instructions of how to make a cupcakes and we were lucky to make real cupcakes! Yummy!

This week we learned about 3D shapes. In maths we have been consolidating, the 3D shapes. We also worked together and built a castle for the King using loose parts! Look at our pictures. We learnt how to use different materials, tools and equipment such as loose parts and junk modelling.

Week beginning 1^st May  2023

This week we read a book called ‘If I were a King’ by Chelsea O’Byrne. We participated in a small group and whole class discussion focusing on the question: ‘What would you do if you were a King or Queen of Mora Primary School?’ We articulated and shared our ideas with our peers.

This week we learned about 3D shapes. We learnt the names of 3D shapes and recognised them in our environment. We also worked together and built a carriage for the King using real objects! Look at our pictures. I wonder if you can recognise the 3D shapes.

This week we learnt we learnt our number bonds to 10 by splitting 10 into 2 parts. We used different resources such as counters, cubes, and bricks to help us record the number facts. For example, 0+10=10 or 2+8+10. Perhaps you can support your child to say the number bonds to 10.

In Literacy, we learnt how to construct sentences using colourful semantic strips.

Our story for this week is called ‘Sam plants a sunflower.’ Sam is a little cat, who decided to plant lots of beautiful sunflowers in his garden. We used our phonics sounds and the colourful semantics strips to help us write about the story.

We began our summer term consolidating number bonds to 6,7 and 8. We looked at different ways to make 6, 7 and 8 using different resources and wrote the number facts. For example, 2+4=6, 3+3=6. Perhaps you can support your child to say the number bonds to 6,7 and 8.

Happy Eid to all who celebrate!

This week we learnt to follow and to write an instruction. We explored and discussed facts about plants and how to grow them. We carefully followed the instruction how to plant sunflowers. After that, we had a go at writing our own instruction and we discussed what plants need to survive. Water and sunlight!

In maths, we have been learning to finding different ways to make 6, 7 and 8, using resources such as; number bonds frame, a part and whole template, and we are recording number facts to represent number bonds to 8.

This week we recognised and made our own repeating patterns. We focused on ABB and AAB patterns using different resources and different actions.

‘Jack and the beanstalk’ is the title of our story this week. We have been developing our communication and language by talking about the main events of the story, the setting and the characters. We also sequenced the events from the story using sequence cards and wrote simple sentences.

This week, we continued to explore traditional tales and learnt how to listen, respond, retell and talk about longer stories. We re-read the story ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’ Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. We acted out the story and used story maps to helps us retell the main parts of the story (beginning, middle and the end.  

In Maths, we used everyday language to talk about time. We sequenced and ordered important events in the day and we used special words related to time.

This week, we are exploring traditional tales in order to create our own book cover. Using our own words, we retold different stories and we discussed what features of the book covers are, then we had a go making book covers for our favourite stories.

In Maths, we learnt how to rote count numbers to 20. Rote counting means when can remember and recite numbers in the correct order. We sang counting songs and completed missing number exercises to consolidate our learning about counting.

 We have been reading ‘The Smeds and The Smoos’. The Smeds are red and The Smoos are blue! They absolutely do not ever mix!!! One day a Smed falls in love with a Smoo and together they create a Smed-Smoo!

In maths we have been learning to combine two groups of different objects to find how many there are altogether.

In phonics, we have been revisiting and reviewing all sounds we have learnt so far as well as writing simple sentences using tricky words.

This week we started to explore non-fiction books. We have been looking at pictures and watching videos about dinosaurs and using descriptive language to talk about them. Then, we assembled some dinosaurs and labelled their body parts (long neck, tail, wing). We also wrote simple sentences to describe them.

In Maths, we learnt how to find make a pair using objects such as socks, wellies, shoes and gloves. We also learnt how to make a pair of related objects such as fork and a knife and how to match the number cards with its value. Perhaps at home you can find and make related pairs (knife and fork) with your child.

This week we read the story ‘The Gingerbread man.’ The story is about an old man and old woman who were baking some gingerbread, when all of a sudden the gingerbread man jumped off the counter and ran out of the door! He was chased by different animals but he was so fast and he managed to escape. His favourite phrase was, ‘ Run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m a gingerbread man.’ In reception we learnt how to write a speech bubble for different characters from the book.

In Maths, we learnt how to find one less using concrete objects such as counters, shells, pine cones and ten/five frames. As well as practicing recording the answers and writing number sentences. Lastly, to consolidate our learning we played a simple one more or one less game. Perhaps at home you can practice counting to 10 (forwards and backwards) with your child.

This week we explored the composition of numbers to 5. We found different ways to make 5, using resources such as; number bonds frame, a part and whole template. We also recorded number facts to represent number bonds to 5.

We have kicked off with the story ‘The Colour Monster’. The story is about a monster who shows different feelings. His emotions are all over the place. We shared ideas about what makes us feel this way and what we can do to be calm. We created our own monster and wrote how we feel as well as we match feelings with the correct colour and draw a picture to represent our emotion. Then we are going to use our body to express feelings.

In Maths, we have been learning about capacity. We learnt to use mathematical language related to capacity such as full, half-full and empty to describe and compare different sized containers. We also estimated how much liquid containers held and measured to check whose prediction was right. We also made

This week has been short but sweet! The children have come back to school eager and ready to learn.

We have been talking about what we have been up to during our time off as well as recapping our phonics.

In Reception, we had an amazing DT and Maths week. We baked our muffins using different ingredients and we created safe containers for our muffins.

Week beginning 12th December 2022

Snow and lots of snow. Our snowman has melted, we had to find all the body parts and name them.  We also learnt how to build our own snowman and label all the body parts. Then, we wrote simple captions and sentences to describe the places where the snowman had been.

In maths, we have been learning the names of 3D shapes; cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder, cone and pyramid. We have been wrapping and unwrapping 3D shaped boxes as well as hunting for and sorting 3D shapes. Perhaps you could help wrap some presents this festive season and identify which 3D shape it is. Or you could go on your own 3D shape hunt around your house or the park.

Congratulations to all the children on completing your first full term in Reception! We are so proud of everything you have achieved so far and all the progress you have made. You worked really hard. This week, we were reading the story ‘Stickman’ by Julia Donaldson. The Stickman was used for different things such as a mast for a flag, to play fetch with a dog and even as a log for the fire! We got our thinking caps on and thought of all the different things we could use sticks for.  We created our own stick and gave it a name! Stickman missed his family whilst he was off on his adventures, so we wrote post cards from Stickman to his family. We also wrote a ’ missing’ poster to help his family locate him and we wrote a letter to Santa! What a busy week it was! 

In Maths, we have been adding two numbers together as a group and saying how many we have altogether. Then we have been using sentence stems like 2 add 1 makes 3. We also made mark marking to represent the number sentence and used an addition mat to record the answers.

Week beginning 28th November 2022

Oh no, bear! This week we read a book called ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. We investigated what has happened in our building. We collected and labelled the evidence we found. Then, we drew a map of all the places the bear had been and labelled our map.

 In Maths, we were measuring distance. We used words like ‘near, far, nearest and furthest’. We have been throwing snowballs and seeing who could throw the furthest and thinking about how we could measure the distance the snowball travelled. We have also been seeing how far we could jump and how far we could roll cars.

Week beginning 21st November 2022

This week, we continued reading the story ‘Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson. We looked at pictures of animals that live in forests and wrote their names using our phonics knowledge. Then we picked an animal and labelled its body parts. As the Gruffalo was bored of eating bugs, we decided to design a new menu for him! What about Spider and beetroot Smoothie, yummy! In Maths, we have been finding one more than a given number. We used objects and started using ten frames to help us find 1 more. Perhaps, this weekend you could practice counting and making amounts to 10.

Week beginning 14th November 2022

This week we have been reading the story ‘The Gruffalo’. Our learning took us on a very exciting adventure, we were very busy collecting nature objects to use for our literacy and maths lessons. To embed our phonics knowledge, we wrote the initial letter and the whole words of the objects we collected. Then, we practiced wiring some CVC words like cat, mud and wrote simple captions.  In Maths, we have been learning about patterns. We have learnt that patterns are repeated designs. Did you know that patterns are everywhere around us?   

Perhaps, this weekend you could go a pattern hunt around your house or in the park? What can you see? Can you draw the pattern?

Week beginning 7th November 2022

This week we have been continuing with ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ theme. We retold the story using our own words and we created an amazing story map.

In Maths, we learnt a new word ‘subitise’. When we subitise objects, we instantaneously recognise the number of objects in a small group without the need to count them e.g. dots on dice.

We also learnt how to make our own paint. We followed instructions to make our paint and we mixed the colours.

In phonics, we have been revisiting and reviewing all the sounds we have learnt so far as well as beginning to read and write simple words.

This week, we have been reading ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ by Mara Alperin. We made and tasted our own porridge and we also made playdough following the recipe. In Maths, we learnt positional language such as ‘ in front of, under, next to , in , on, between ,behind and above’ to describe the position of objects. 

In phonics, we have been revisiting and reviewing all the sounds we have learnt so far as well as beginning to read and write simple words.

The Reception Team

Our first term settling into Reception has been a great success! We came into Mora eager and ready to learn. We have been super busy getting to know our new friends, classroom and teachers. We have been embedding our new rules, routines and behaviours and have been extremely successful at it.

This term we have been reading lots of different stories like ‘The Lion Inside, Handa’s Surprise, Rapunzel, Paddington’ and our favourite ‘Poo in the Zoo’. We also did lots of different activities to embed our learning. 

In Maths, we have been learning about counting objects up to 10. We have been learning about 2D shapes and their properties. We were looking for the shapes in our environment. Maybe at home, in your garden or the park, have a look around and see if there are 2D shapes. 

We have had a wonderful half term getting to know your children, you should be so proud of them because we are! Over the holidays go for an autumn walk, get cooking in the kitchen and spend time with loved ones. Talk about your experiences, every conversation is another learning opportunity. Have a restful half term before the hard work starts again!

Have a go at reading and writing these letters/words with your child.

Reminders: 

• All children need a spare bag of (old) clothes on their peg.
• All children need a book bag so they can take a story book home to share with their family. Please bring story books back to school the following day so the children can take a new one home. Or you can keep the same book for a few days if you are really enjoying it!
• Please make sure all uniform and clothing is labelled. Please be patient with us in locating the missing uniform. It is so important that you have written your child’s name on all items of clothing. It is quite difficult to locate uniforms when your child’s name is not on it.
• Please talk to your child about what they have been learning about in school. The slideshow of pictures below could help spark an interesting conversation. 
• We welcome donations of old recycled materials for the children to do ‘junk modelling’ with. This includes old (clean) cereal boxes, milk cartons, toilet roll tubes and any food packaging you may have. Please ensure none of these items have any traces of nuts. We have children in the setting who are allergic to nuts.
• We are a nut aware school. Please ensure there are no nuts in your child’s packed lunch. This includes peanut butter sandwiches and pesto sauce. Also, children should not bring sweets or chocolate to school, we are encouraging children to eat healthily. 
• Please ensure your child does not bring any toys from home to school.
