This week we read the book called ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson and Alex Schffler. In this much-loved picture book, a little mouse walks through the woods and encounters a fox, an owl and a snake. To fend them off, he tells each about the scary Gruffalo - but when the mouse encounters the Gruffalo himself, he cleverly invents another tale and manages to escape from danger yet again. We had lots of fun acting out the story and creating a story map to help us retell the story. In Maths, we learned how to represent and compose numbers. Composition of numbers is the different ways we can make each number. To make 3 for example, we can do 1 and 1 makes 2. We used different objects and made marks to represent and compose our numbers.
In phonics, we have been revisiting and reviewing all the sounds we have learned so far. We are using the sounds to read and write simple words and phrases.

Week beginning 16th October
Our first term settling into Reception has been a great success! We came into Mora eager and ready to learn. We have been super busy getting to know our new friends, classroom and teachers. We have been embedding our new rules, routines and behaviours and have been extremely successful at it.
This term we have been reading lots of different stories like ‘The Lion Inside, Handa’s Surprise, and our favourite ‘Poo in the Zoo’. We also did lots of different activities to embed our learning.
In Maths, we have been learning about counting objects up to 10. We have been learning about repeated patterns and measuring.
We have had a wonderful half term getting to know your children, you should be so proud of them because we are! Over the holidays go for an autumn walk, get cooking in the kitchen and spend time with loved ones. Talk about your experiences, every conversation is another learning opportunity. Have a restful half-term before the hard work starts again!
We have been busy in phonics learning our first set of sounds;
s a t p i n m p o g c k
Have a go at reading and writing these letters/words with your child.
We have also been learning some tricky words. Tricky words are words we cannot sound out:

We used these sounds to make words:
sat, pin, sit, pop, dad, mat, pat, pin
Have a go at reading and writing these words.
Reminders
All children need a spare bag of (old) clothes on their peg.
All children need a book bag so they can take a story book home to share with their family. Please bring story books back to school the following day so the children can take a new one home. Or you can keep the same book for a few days if you are really enjoying it!
Please make sure all uniform and clothing is labelled. Please be patient with us in locating the missing uniform. It is so important that you have written your child’s name on all items of clothing. It is quite difficult to locate uniforms when your child’s name is not on it.
Please talk to your child about what they have been learning about in school. The slideshow of pictures below could help spark an interesting conversation.
We welcome donations of old recycled materials for the children to do ‘junk modelling’ with. This includes old (clean) cereal boxes, milk cartons, toilet roll tubes and any food packaging you may have. Please ensure none of these items have any traces of nuts. We have children in the setting who are allergic to nuts.
We are a nut aware school. Please ensure there are no nuts in your child’s packed lunch. This includes peanut butter sandwiches and pesto sauce. Also, children should be bringing sweets or chocolate to school, we are encouraging children to eat healthily.
Please ensure your child does not bring any toys from home to school.
Thank you
